NUS votes for national demonstration

Youth Fight for Jobs and Education, national organiser, Paul Callanan, said: “We very much welcome these moves from the NUS for a national demonstration in the autumn term and a national walkout of college students. The last time the NUS held a national demo was in November 2010, when over 50,000 students marched in London against sky-high fees and the scrapping of EMA. That unleashed a movement of strikes, protests and walkouts that spread like wildfire across the country. That’s what we need to do again if the wholesale destruction of education is to be stopped”

Socialist Students national organiser Claire Laker-Mansfield said: “We call on all students to back this action and actively build on campuses to make it a real show of anger from students. We also call on students to back workers strike action in defence of pensions on 10th May. Workers and students need to build a movement together that will stem the heavy flow of cuts coming from the government. Now is the time to build a mass movement against cuts and fight for education for the 99%”

Youth Fight for Jobs was launched in 2009 in response to rising levels of youth unemployment. We have recently completed the 330 mile Jarrow March for Jobs. We were backed by the Unite, PCS, RMT, CWU, UCU, FBU, Bectu and TSSA trade unions.

Socialist Students is a campaigning socialist organisation that has societies in universities and colleges nationwide
