Sheffield Hallam Student Democracy in Tatters

This it the facebook event with much of the dispute on it.

Over the past 2 days, Sheffield Hallam Union has found itself in the middle of a row over student democracy.

The controversy arose when a petition signed by over 500 students was submitted to the union to call for a referendum on the issue of lobbying the university to issue its budget based on the needs of students and staff.
This would budget would include the halting, and reversal of, course privatisation; the scrapping of the recent fee rises, as a step towards free education; the university to retake ownership of student halls; and a living wage for all staff employed by, and on behalf of the university. Calling for the extra funds required to be made up form executive pay, selling off university assets and linking with other universities to demand the remaining money from government. » Read more..

Sussex University Occupation: ‘They say privatise- we fight back and organise’

‘Students and workers, unite and fight’ was the chant reverberating around Sussex campus on Monday 25 March. Up to 2,000 students and staff descended on the university’s Library Square for a protest marking the culmination so far of a bitterly fought campaign against privatisation.
Taking fright at the scale of the movement, the university’s management had shut down large parts of the campus, including all its shops and cafes. The main administrative building was in ‘lockdown’, with most workers told not to come in. Bars were fitted on all the windows. This created a sense that the university had been ‘given over’ to the protesters for a day.

Sussex Uni Occupied – Solidarity from Unison campus activist (personal capacity)

centre at the top of Bramber House at Sussex University. They are protesting
against plans from the university management to privatise services which will
affect 10% or 235 members of staff, by selling off a list of services to private
